There are three main modifiable reasons why women (and their fetuses/newborns) die due to pregnancy complications: (i) delays by the woman herself in recognising the seriousness of her condition; (ii) delays in her being assessed and then transported to a centre capable of providing effective and life-saving interventions; and (iii) delays in the health facility in providing those interventions.

By using a pragmatic approach of implementing a package of care including these evidence-based interventions at the community level, PRE-EMPT will address the main barriers to effective, and life-saving, care: delays in triage, transport, and treatment.
